Cité Europe is located just a few minutes away from the place where Louis Blériot took off. We have the vocation to be a space for meetings and exchanges in the heart of the culture of the territory of the Calais agglomeration. That is why commemorating this fantastic feat was obvious to us. Having welcomed more than 7 million visitors, we recognize our role in the huge struggle for the preservation of the environment and we strive to establish a sustainable policy and are very much involved in this matter. Our site, on the shores of the English Channel, have made us particularly aware of the fate of the maritime area, which a part of our visitors depend on for their economic and tourist activities.
It is therefore natural that we responded to Jacques-Olivier Travers’ request and his Wings of Freedom. To attempt the feat of crossing the English Channel by paraglider with a 15-year- old eagle who could not fly two years ago, seems to be an adventure worthy of the one attempted 100 years ago!
We have been fortunate to welcome him in our centres with his birds, for activities and we were very sensitive to the beauty of his protégés but also to the quality of the message of his knowledge and protection of birds of prey which he conveys. This project 2009 is ambitious, with the flight which will be a world first, raising awareness with the exhibition about the oceans shown by the foundation Antinéa and sustainable with the production of the documentary by Jacques-Olivier on the alarming state of the seas and the osprey population. We hope he will touch you as he has touched us and that many of you will visit us during the week of July, 20 to 25, in the centre Cité Europe.
